Harris has butted heads with the National Rifle Association and continues to endorse strict gun regulations. While serving as District Attorney in San Francisco, Harris, along with other California district attorneys, filed an amicus brief in District of Columbia v. Heller arguing that the Washington, D.C. gun law did not violate the Second Amendment. In her second term as District Attorney, she said that getting guns off the streets was a priority. Harris also supported Sanders Medicare for All bill and is soft on immigration.
Kamala Harris rolled out her presidential bid and, despite the millions she raised seemingly overnight, she was dead on arrival following her first speech in Iowa. And it wasn’t just her promise to provide “Medicare for all.” It also wasn’t the confirmed rumor that she slept with the married former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. It was, in part, because of the accusation that she relied on Brown to supposedly launch her political career in exchange for sexual favors. Trump is certainly no choir boy, but he wasn’t giving it away in the boudoir to get favors from powerful people.
It’s also bad timing for Harris. In case you’ve already forgotten in the 24-hour news cycle, there’s that sticky #MeToo movement. Although the #MeToo movement quietly died out because, let’s face it, it’s hard to have sympathy for ambitious actresses sleeping with powerful men to get ahead then making accusations of rape after a decade and a Hollywood star. The optics of sex-for-power makes Harris look extremely ambitious. Not a good look for a female candidate. Hillary Clinton’s ambitions were her most serious detraction. Hillary got around this not by trading sexual favors, but adding her opponents to her infamous “kill” list.
Harris’ biggest problem is that she wants to be the female version of former President Obama. If Obama could rise from the ashes of the infamously corrupt halls of Chicago politics to become president, than so could she rise from the progressive swamp of California. Never mind that Chicago was crumbling under decades of Democrat rule and San Francisco has become a fetid cesspool of human waste and used heroin needles. Despite her attempts to smile and appear warm, Harris came off as disingenuous and, at times, giddily vindictive. Like Obama, she knows she must appeal to a minority base she is clearly not a part of because of her privilege and appeal to the coastal elite donors who she must charm to win. Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t have the charisma Obama possessed to pull it off.
Obama also struggled with appealing to his minority base. He would notably change his cadence and language when speaking to black or other minority audiences even though it was Hillary Clinton who was most often mocked for this tactic. In Obama’s case, both he and the audience knew he wasn’t a party of his tribe, but they played along with the game because of his skin color. But Harris has several problems Obama didn’t have.
First, Harris doesn’t have the connections Obama had to appeal to the east coast blue blood elites. She also doesn’t appeal to the west coast tech crowd because of her desire to strip their coffers and redistribute the wealth to illegal immigrants. There’s that “small” problem of young, wealthy tech workers who are living in their cars because they can no longer afford to live where they work in progressive California. The techies may lean socialist, but they are feeling the burn of progressive policies. Harris also doesn’t appeal to black voters, who have been in a cultural war with illegal aliens for decades. It has been the black community that has been most hurt by unchecked illegal immigration.
Finally, and most obvious, Harris doesn’t have a feel for political spin. Never, ever just come right out and say what you’re really going to do when running for president, unless of course, you’re running against the entire swamp, as President Trump did. Obama was a master at saying one thing while doing another. It served him well because he wasn’t a one-term president. He was able to fool a lot of the electorate who never pay attention to what’s going on in government with his Hope and Change schtick for a long time. Eventually, even black voters were disillusioned with his policies. Someone should tell Harris you have to play to a wider audience if you actually want to win a presidential election. In other words, middle America must be lied to.
I have never thought Harris was a serious contender for President, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t being used for other reasons, which you can read more about here: Is Kamala Harris Foreplay to a Michelle Obama Ticket? Her performance during Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings also turned off a lot of moderate Democrats who believe in innocent before being found guilty.
The Democratic party implosion promises to get a lot more interesting with the addition of Howard Schultz, who announced he is going to run as an Independent in 2020. As the freshman House of Representatives are busy introducing legislation to take “So help me God,” out of official oaths and ramping up unprecedented anti-Semitism, expanding social programs we can’t pay for, and saying the world is going to end in 12 years because of global warming, the rest of the country will be looking for an adult, any adult, who can put this chaotic class in order. #Reignwell.
